London-based defence technology startup Agon has emerged from stealth with $30 million in funding to build simulation environments for training and testing autonomous defence systems, targeting a growing need for the infrastructure behind military AI.
The funding comprises a $7 million pre-seed round backed by Lakestar, 201 Ventures and D3, followed by a $23 million seed round involving XYZ Venture Capital, Lux Capital and Northzone, alongside Bessemer Venture Partners, Conviction, Global Founders Capital, Never Lift, Ora Global, Speedinvest and Xavier Niel. Lakestar founder Klaus Hommels has joined Agon’s board.
The company plans to use the funding to scale its platform for European governments, defence companies and AI developers. Agon describes the system as “sovereign infrastructure” for defence AI, allowing users to train and test autonomous systems without relying solely on live exercises or external data platforms.
Agon’s platform, which it calls a “synthetic battle arena”, creates virtual environments in which autonomous systems can be trained against changing scenarios across land, sea, air, space and cyber domains. The company says the system can incorporate conflict intelligence to make scenarios more realistic while allowing customers to retain control of sensitive data.
That addresses a particular problem in defence AI: the data needed to train and test autonomous systems can be difficult to obtain, particularly where information is classified or cannot easily be shared between governments and companies. Agon’s proposition is to generate synthetic training environments that can supplement real-world data.
Agon was founded by Chief Executive Tristam Constant, a former British Army officer who later led Applied Intuition’s European defence business and held a senior European role at Anduril, and Junaid Hussain, who co-founded Cambridge Aerospace and AI and gaming company Iconic. David Helgason, founder and former chief executive of Unity Technologies, is chairman. The company has offices in London and Berlin and has not publicly named customers.
